What I gained most out of the preliminary round of the contest was not the winning or losing part, but I got to meet different people. I first met this 20 year-old guy. He's contestant number 2. He got to know that I was Catholic after I gave my speech and we just started talking. He's from St. Theresa's church. And also a catechist. Teaching sec 2s though. He really reminded me of someone else, but I shall not dwell on that. Rather, I got to meet another Catholic at such a non-catholic event. Really shows the universality of the Catholic Church. Just like how at World Youth Day, I got to meet tons of Catholic youths from every corner of the Earth.
Next, I met this guy. He was contestant number 5, I was 4. He sat beside me and we became friends, though he is probably 50 plus. His name is Jeshua The funny thing was that, I overheard him talking about his occupation, a school counsellor in East Coast Pri. Sch. Eh, ECPS sounds familiar ah. Oh it's the school that Mrs Lim went to become a VP. And I asked him whether he knows Mrs Lim and he did.... How small can the world be? Btw, I just found out that my sec 1 principal in STC, Mrs Evelyn Ong, is now the principal of ECPS. Wow, the world is even smaller!
Then, sitting on my other side, contestant number 3, was also an interesting man. After my speech, again, he found out that I was a student from NTU. and it just so happened that he is a part-time tutor there as well for MB106. What is even more surprising is that, I asked Amanda who her tutor for MB106 is (she's taking that as an elective), and it turned out to be HIM! Like omg, omg, omg!!
This world is really so amazing. It could be because Singapore is small, but I choose to believe that it's the world which is small! =) My 6 and a 1/2 hours spent there wasn't wasted.
Fyi, I got into the finals (which I least expected because everyone was so good). Finals will be at Nee Soon South CC, 27th September, Saturday, 1p.m. Tickets at $12 including high tea. Time to think of a new humorous speech!
